Crayola LLC utilizes a comprehensive program to ensure the safety of our products. The program encompasses the life of each product from design concept, through full scale production and distribution. Our program is applied to products made both in our facilities as well as those produced by our supplier partners.
As the leading brand of children's art materials, we have always taken a leadership role in product safety. In 1936, Crayola became a founding member of what was then called the "Crayon, Watercolor and Craft Institute," and is now called the Art and Creative Material Institute (ACMI). This organization promotes product safety in art materials for children. All Crayola art materials have earned and display the Art and Creative Materials Institute's (ACMI) APPROVED PRODUCT (AP) seal. Our art materials are reviewed and evaluated by an independent Board Certified toxicologist to ensure we are offering safe and nontoxic art materials of the highest quality.
In consideration of the current laws, regulations, directives and standards existing in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, Product Safety conducts a design hazard and a risk assessment on all products during the product development phase.
All raw materials sourced for use in our manufacturing plants are purchased only from approved suppliers. Suppliers must have sample material tested for contaminants and evaluated in our process prior to being approved. Supplier Quality then coordinates periodic testing of all raw materials for potential contaminants identified in the risk assessment process. Samples of all materials with identified potential contaminants are submitted to approved third party laboratories and tested. The results are reviewed with our Product Safety group and the ACMI Toxicologist, as required.
Throughout the production cycle and at various times during the year, Crayola samples finished products from our suppliers or distribution center and submits them to a CPSC certified independent laboratory, for testing to determine compliance with ASTM F963, the absence of phthalates and other CPSC requirements. Additionally, prior to export from the U.S. and other manufacturing sources, finished goods are tested for compliance to the requirements of each export market. Our Global Quality Assurance team ensures that products in our global supply chain are consumer-safe and that we comply with the most current applicable worldwide requirements, government directives and voluntary standards regarding product safety and quality. Lastly, Crayola’s Regulatory Affairs and Product Safety groups monitor the changing global regulatory environment and potential legislative initiatives to alert Quality Assurance and other affected areas of responsibility regarding future rules, regulations, standards and guidelines so Crayola can maintain a leadership role in children’s product safety.

We have a comprehensive program to audit our global supply base which ensures that our suppliers' employees are treated and paid fairly. We are an active participant in the International Council of Toy Industries' "Caring, Awareness, Responsible, Ethical" Program
(ICTI-CARE) that promotes ethical manufacturing, fair labor treatment, and employee health and safety.
