Why

With just a little pinch, a tender squeeze, and a few gentle fingernail pokes, a whole flock of fine feathery friends emerges from soft Crayola Model Magic®.

Steps

  1. 1. Birds of a feather do flock together! To make your own flock, mix the color from Crayola Washable Markers with white Model Magic and blend to get the color you wish.
  2. 2. For each bird, roll Model Magic into a ball and pinch a beak. Pull out and up from the sides to make thin wings. Squeeze out a bit more for the tail. With your fingernail, mark feathers. Air-dry your birds.
  3. 3. Cut construction paper with Crayola Scissors. Draw a farmyard, pond, or some other scene for your feathery friends. Glue the birds in place with Crayola School Glue. Air-dry your scene.

When & Where

"My child is fascinated with tiny things. She made an Easter centerpiece with her chicks."
- Alana N., mother of 5-year-old.

"We studied what chicks look like--beaks go out, eyes go in, cheeks puff out, wings are feathery."
- Sierra M., home-school mom of 7- and 9-year-olds.

Interesting Info

Marshmallow Peeps®, those cute little sweets shaped like chicks, used to take 27 hours to make. They were squeezed out of a pastry tube and had hand-painted eyes. Now a Peep® can be made in 6 minutes. Some people freeze them, roast them, microwave them, and even use them as pizza toppings.
