Why
Fly with the fun! Design delicate dragonfly wings with Crayola Color Explosion™. Stick them into a Model Magic body to make a colorful insect.
Steps
- 1. Fold Crayola Color Explosion paper in half. With Crayola Scissors, cut out two dragonfly wings with one end pointed. You’ll have four wings!
- 2. Use the Color Explosion color-reveal marker on the black side of the paper to create beautiful wings. Dragonfly wings have very thin lines, so press very lightly. Or make your wings any way you’d like!
- 3. Roll a ball of Crayola Model Magic into a tapered dragonfly body. Press a little head onto the body. Model Magic sticks to itself when it is fresh from the pack. Add skinny coils in circles or swirls, dots, or stripes to decorate your dragonfly.
- 4. Press the wings into the dragonfly’s body just behind the head. If you want to make a puppet, press a craft stick into the body. Or air-dry the dragonfly and hang it up with string! You could even do a science fair project with insect replicas.
When & Where
"Children are always so curious about insects! They made several different flying creatures like this."
- Akeesha T., after-school crafts coordinator.
"Our boys loved making dragonfly pond scenes, too!"
- Darren C., Cub Scout leader.
Interesting Info
The word dragon is an Old French word that comes from Latin that means serpent. Can you see how a dragonfly looks like a mini version of a serpent?

Crayola Modeling Materials including Crayola Model Magic®, and Model Magic Fusion™, Crayola Air-Dry Clay, and Crayola Dough—
- Keep away from open flames. Do not use to make candleholders, hot plates, trivets, or other similar objects that will be used or placed near fire and other heat sources.
- Do not put in an oven, microwave, or kiln.
- Do not make into vessels/containers that will hold unpackaged food.
- The use of modeling material to make items that look like food is discouraged for children younger than age 5 to avoid their confusion with real food.
- Unless sealed with a water-resistant glaze, do not make projects exposed to or immersed in water, such as boats or outdoor bird feeders. They would disintegrate when exposed to moisture.
- Crayola Dough—contains gluten (wheat flour) as an ingredient.
- Crayola Air-Dry Clay, Crayola Model Magic and Model Magic Fusion are gluten-free. However, they are produced on the same machinery as Crayola Dough which does contain gluten. Although the machines are cleaned prior to the start of each production run, there is a slight possibility that trace amounts of gluten from Crayola Dough may be present in the other modeling compound products.
