Why

Children have a natural interest in diverse creatures. With this activity, they find out about the importance of preserving endangered species.

Steps

  1. 1. Look up information about endangered species, either in books or on the Internet. Find some detailed pictures.
  2. 2. On light-colored construction paper, draw a portrait of your favorite endangered animal with Crayola® Colored Pencils. Be sure to include plants and other animals it needs to prosper.
  3. 3. Cut out your endangered animal, and its environment, with Crayola Scissors. Glue your drawings to a contrasting color of construction paper with a Crayola Glue Stick.
  4. 4. Include a message for people who look at your drawing. Alert them to the importance of helping endangered species.

When & Where

"My children are curious about the rain forest and love to draw animals. This was a great way to expand their interests."
- Shantha M., home school parent.

"After my son learned about the rapid decline of certain species, he wanted to do something to help. His artwork makes a real statement."
- Antil F., dad of 9-year-old.

Interesting Info

Why are some species endangered? Causes include pesticides, strip mining, pollution, draining swamps, leveling forests, extermination to protect livestock, and unrestricted hunting. The Nature Conservancy at www.tnc.org is a wonderful resource.
