Why

This adorable Santa is a useful decoration! Kids create this holder for Christmas cards, candy canes, and holiday treasures.

Steps

  1. 1. Cover your work area with recycled newspaper. Paint the inside and rim of a heavy paper plate red with Crayola® Washable Kid's Paint and Paint Brushes. Paint a piece of paper half red and half brown or black. Dry.
  2. 2. Ask an adult to cut a heavy paper plate in half with Crayola Scissors. This is Santa's face, so paint the back of it if you like.
  3. 3. Use Crayola School Glue to attach the half plate to the painted plate to form a pocket.
  4. 4. On the back of the painted paper, use Crayola Colored Pencils to sketch Santa's eyes, nose, and a mouth. Cut them out and glue them on the pocket. Glue on cotton balls for Santa's hair, beard, and mustache.
  5. 5. Punch a hole at the top. Pull ribbon or yarn through the hole for hanging.

When & Where

"Our kids now have a place to put their cards from grandparents and friends."
- Rosalina T., mother of children ages 6 and 8.

"Children made these as Advent gifts for their families. They're definitely keepsakes."
- Nimisha A., family child care provider.

Interesting Info

The U.S. version of St. Nicholas is thought to have come from the Dutch Sint Klaas. Immigrants from the Netherlands who came to New Amsterdam (New York) brought this tradition with them.

Safety Guidelines

Crayola Washable Paints—Not for use as body/face paint.

Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.

String-Like Materials—Includes string, raffia, lacing, yarn, ribbon, and other similar material. Children 3 years and younger should not be given any string-like material that is longer than 12 inches. Close adult supervision is essential whenever children use string-like material. When crafts are to be worn around the necks of children 8 years and younger, attach the ends of the “string-like material” with clear adhesive tape, which allows easy release of the bond if the craft becomes entangled or caught on equipment. For children older than 8 years, the ends of the “string-like material” may be tied and knotted.
