A Drawing as Tall as Me

Why

How tall are you? Find a friend to help, and trace around each other. Then color yourselves (or each other) in memorable life-size pictures.

Steps

1. With a partner, roll out paper on the floor as long as each of you are tall.

2. One at a time, lie down on the paper. Trace around each other’s bodies with Crayola® Washable Multicultural Markers. These are perfect for every beautiful color of skin.

3. With Crayola Washable Markers, color your hair, face, clothes, jewelry—anything you are wearing (or wish you could!).

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Where & When

"This activity appeals to kids of all ages. I have a priceless collection of my children’s views of themselves over the years."
Dawn D., mother of 3-, 7-, and 10-year-olds.

"We display kids’’ portraits along the hall. Working together was the start of many new friendships."
Jonas L., after-school coordinator.

Interesting Info

Another type of portrait is a silhouette. It is a picture of a person showing only their outline (like a shadow). Most silhouettes are cut from black paper. Try making one with Crayola Construction Paper Crayons or Gel Markers.
