Build a City With Boxes

Why

Children know a lot about city planning because they're such good observers. Build on their planning and construction skills with this city made of boxes.

Steps

1. Gather several small, recycled cardboard boxes. Use Crayola® Scissors to cut construction paper to cover the sides of each box.

2. With Crayola Twistables Crayons and Crayola Washable Markers, draw windows, doors, and other features for each house or building.

3. Attach the construction paper to the boxes with Crayola Glue Sticks.

4. Arrange the boxes on top of recycled cardboard to design your street scenes.

5. Draw in streets, sidewalks, intersections, and parking lots to complete your city made of boxes.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project.

Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.

Where & When

"My kids worked well together to make their city. They made toy cars and buses to drive on the streets, too."
Cara F., mom of kids ages 7 and 10.

"My daughter's Brownie troop set up a Paper City during three meetings. Each girl made up a city poem to share with visiting families."
Sabrina J., troop leader.

Interesting Info

Art is a great stress reliever and team builder. Group projects give children opportunities to plan together, use their imaginations, and play with the finished product.
