Bursts of Color Tracings

Why

KISS—Keep It Simple & Shapely. Trace around everyday stuff on Black Color Explosion™ and you’ll be amazed at how retro your outlines look.

Steps

1. Stuff that you use everyday often has distinct shapes. Pick one with a shape that appeals to you—maybe your favorite ice cream scoop, your computer mouse, or your bike padlock.

2. Lay the dry item on Crayola Black Color Explosion™ Paper. Trace around it with a Black Color Explosion Marker. Color will burst out of the outline. Move the object and trace it again. Continue outlining until you have a dynamic design. If you like, mix a couple of shapes for another unique look.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Where & When

"We made this activity into a treasure hunt. The children drew in secret, traded drawings, and tried to match the tools. "
Andreas V., dad of 7-year-old twins and nine-year-old.

"After making drawings, the girls looked to find and name the shapes hidden within them. They called themselves shape detectives. "
Tara P., Daisy scout leader.

Interesting Info

Tracing paper is translucent, dense, and extra strong, thanks to chemical treatments during manufacturing. Paper was first invented in China during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BCE-23) and has truly revolutionized human history.
