Butterfly Finger Puppets

Why

Go buggy! Re-create nature's beautiful butterfly patterns on finger-puppet wings.

Steps

1. Look at pictures in The Butterfly Alphabet or other books to see the many different kinds and shapes of butterflies. Watch butterflies at an insect zoo or outdoors. Notice their beautiful wing patterns.

2. On white construction paper, draw the outline of a butterfly with Crayola® Erasable Colored Pencils. Cut it out with Crayola Scissors.

3. Cover your art area with newspaper. Paint your butterfly with Crayola Washable Watercolors and Watercolor Brushes. Dry. Paint the back side. Dry.

4. Using Crayola Metallic Colored Pencils and your imagination, create beautiful designs on both sides of your butterfly wings. Dry.

5. Cut out a strip of paper and form a loop to go around your finger. Attach the ends with Crayola Glue Sticks. Glue the loop to the back of the butterfly so you can use it as a finger puppet.

6. If you wish, use Crayola Gel Markers on black paper to create an entirely different look.

Where & When

"Our daughter’s birthday party theme was butterflies. Her guests made several finger puppets each on both black and white paper."
Elizabeth Z., mother of age 6.

"The children sang butterfly songs and created finger plays with their flittering finger puppets!"
Islama X., cooperative nursery school parent.

Interesting Info

Butterfly wing patterns are formed with very tiny overlapping scales. The colors protect the butterfly’s body by scaring and confusing other insects and birds that would eat the butterfly.
