Celebrate With a Gingerbread House!

Why

Save those empty art supply containers! Transform them into a festive Gingerbread House to add flair to your holidays.

Steps

1. Use foam board to build a frame for your gingerbread house. Ask an adult to cut out the walls, windows, and other pieces. Remember the roof, chimney, and doors! Attach the pieces with Crayola School Glue so the house stands on its own. Air-dry your structure.

2. Use Crayola Color Explosion™ paper and color-reveal markers to draw holiday scenes to show through the windows. Cut them to fit with Crayola Scissors. Glue the scenes inside the windows.

3. Attach the house to a larger piece of foam board to create a sturdy base for display. Add a fence, steps, and other details if you wish. Air-dry the glue.

4. Use Crayola Model Magic® to cover the foam board house. Blend colors to make exactly what you need. Model Magic fresh from the pack sticks to itself. Be creative! Add flower boxes, doorframes, bricks or stone, sidewalks, and snowy trim to your house! Glue any dry pieces together.

5. Use empty art supply containers such as marker barrels, paint bottles, and glue sticks to create characters and embellishments for your gingerbread house. Glue them in place. Be inventive!

6. Brush on colorful highlights with Crayola Washable Kid’s Paint. Air-dry the paint.

7. Add finishing touches to snow, lights, and other places with Crayola Glitter Glue. Friends and family will be amazed at your creativity!

Crayola Modeling Materials including Crayola Model Magic®, and Model Magic Fusion™, Crayola Air-Dry Clay, and Crayola Dough—

  • Do not put in an oven, microwave, or kiln.
  • Do not make into vessels/containers that will hold unpackaged food.
  • The use of modeling material to make items that look like food is discouraged for children younger than age 5 to avoid their confusion with real food.
  • Unless sealed with a water-resistant glaze, do not make projects exposed to or immersed in water, such as boats or outdoor bird feeders. They would disintegrate when exposed to moisture.
  • Crayola Dough—contains gluten (wheat flour) as an ingredient.
  • Crayola Air-Dry Clay, Crayola Model Magic and Model Magic Fusion are gluten-free. However, they are produced on the same machinery as Crayola Dough which does contain gluten. Interesting Info

In the 17th and 18th centuries, gingerbread cookies were designed to resemble characters in well-known legends. As the decorating of these characters grew more elaborate, gingerbread houses associated with the tales were introduced.
