Creepy Lagoon Creatures

Why

What's living in your imaginary lagoon? Create your own creepy creatures with Crayola® Gel Markers.

Steps

1. What are some of the creepiest creatures you've seen in movies, books, or your imagination? Fantasy lagoon animal often have gills and webbed fingers and toes. Which features will your creature have?

2. To make your own fantasy lagoon inhabitant, cover a cardboard paper towel tube with construction paper. Cut the paper to fit the tube using Crayola Scissors. Glue it in place with a Crayola Glue Stick.

3. Cut additional pieces of construction paper to create a head, arms, legs, and other limbs for your creature. For texture, cut small scales into the limbs by folding the paper and snipping it.

4. Use Crayola Gel Markers to decorate your creature's body and appendages. Add scales, gills, claws, teeth, and facial features. How creepy can you make it?

5. Glue the finished pieces in place. Dry.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Recycled Cardboard Tubes—Use paper towel tubes, gift-wrap tubes, or long cardboard tubes that can be cut to any length. Health professionals caution against using recycled toilet paper tubes for arts & crafts projects because of the potential fecal contamination.

Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.

Interesting Info

If you saw the movie "Creature from the Black Lagoon" you were watching two different actors. The above-water scenes were played by actor Ben Chapman, while the underwater scenes were played by Ricoh Browning, an Olympic swimmer. Browning went on to create the "Flipper" series, which featured a dolphin as its main character.
