Critter Clubhouse

Why

Create an animal playhouse using your imagination, a recycled cardboard box, Crayola Model Magic®, and the Neon Color Explosion® Paper and Marker System. Let the pretend fun begin!

Steps

1. Use your own ideas or follow the steps here to build a Critter Clubhouse.

2. Set your box on its side with one flap flat on the table. Fold the top and side flaps back. Tape in place so they stand out from the opening.

3. Create a sign for the top flap of your clubhouse. Shape letters using Crayola Model Magic® strips. Press them onto the flap—Model Magic sticks to almost any surface. Press and spread colorful Model Magic pieces between the letters.

4. Design the side flaps. Cut Crayola Neon Color Explosion® Paper to fit over the side flaps. Use Neon Color Explosion Markers to draw an OPEN sign on one flap and a large fish tank on the other.

5. Decorate the backdrop. Cover the inside back of the box with Neon Color Explosion Paper. To make a long shelf on the wall, fold a long rectangle of the paper in half, bringing the long sides together. Fold each long side back to meet the fold line. Glue flaps to the back wall. Use Neon Color Explosion Markers to draw items on the wall so they look like they are on the shelf. Add signs, a clock, and other items.

6. Add flooring. Cut and fit Neon Color Explosion Paper on the floor inside the clubhouse. Draw a rug or patterned flooring using Neon Color Explosion Markers.

7. Create a front path. On the front flap, press Model Magic pieces down the center to make it look like a stony path.

8. Make grass! Press neon green Model Magic through the holes of a garlic press by squeezing the handles. Carefully remove the "grass" from the garlic press and press in place on the box flap "yard" of your clubhouse. Wash the garlic press in warm soapy water when you are finished.

9. Create a full pond by pressing Model Magic fish directly onto the front box flap.

10. Use your imagination to make a sliding board, boxes of treats, and pet beds from Neon Color Explosion Paper and Markers. Make balls, bones, and other critter playthings from Model Magic. Model Magic dries to the touch overnight and dries completely in 2 to 3 days.

11. To make lots of real-looking or imaginary pets to play with, see Critters for Your Clubhouse on Crayola.com.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Crayola Modeling Materials including Crayola Model Magic®, and Model Magic Fusion™, Crayola Air-Dry Clay, and Crayola Dough—

  • Keep away from open flames. Do not use to make candleholders, hot plates, trivets, or other similar objects that will be used or placed near fire and other heat sources.
  • Do not put in an oven, microwave, or kiln.
  • Do not make into vessels/containers that will hold unpackaged food.
  • The use of modeling material to make items that look like food is discouraged for children younger than age 5 to avoid their confusion with real food.
  • Unless sealed with a water-resistant glaze, do not make projects exposed to or immersed in water, such as boats or outdoor bird feeders. They would disintegrate when exposed to moisture.
  • Crayola Dough—contains gluten (wheat flour) as an ingredient.
  • Crayola Air-Dry Clay, Crayola Model Magic and Model Magic Fusion are gluten-free. However, they are produced on the same machinery as Crayola Dough which does contain gluten. Although the machines are cleaned prior to the start of each production run, there is a slight possibility that trace amounts of gluten from Crayola Dough may be present in the other modeling compound products. For information regarding specific ingredients or allergic concerns, please call our Consumer Affairs department at 1-800-272-9652 weekdays between 9 AM and 4 PM Eastern Standard Time.

Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.
