Filtery, Fluttery Butterflies

Why

Watch butterflies flutter outdoors, then make your own with coffee filters.

Steps

1. Butterflies' dazzling colors twist and turn. We can't touch these fragile creatures, but you can make one for a decoration.

2. Cover your art area with newspaper. Use your Crayola® Paint Brush to wet a coffee filter. Paint the filter with Crayola Washable Watercolors. The colors will blend and mix into beautiful patterns. Decorate a spring clothespin with the paint, too. Air dry.

3. Gather your coffee filter together in the middle. Hold it together with the clothespin.

4. Curl a long twist tie to look like antennae. Twist it around the clothespin.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project.

Small Parts— WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD—Small parts. Not for children under 3 years.

Crayola Washable Paints—Not for use as body/face paint.

Wood—By its nature, wood is rough and may contain splinters or sharp points

Where & When

"Our family has a butterfly bush in our back yard, so we have lots of models. The children ask to make these again and again."
Myra B., mother of ages 6 and 7.

"After raising butterflies, we released them. To say goodbye to our friends, children made these butterflies!"
Aihua W., after-school child care assistant.

Interesting Info

Butterflies taste with their feet. Their taste sensors are located in their feet, (all six of them!), so by standing on their food they can taste it.
