Follow You, Shoe

Why

This project is a shoe-in for fostering family ties. Children walk away with a leg up on fine-motor skills and shape awareness.

Steps

1. With a Crayola® Washable Marker, trace each family member's shoe on paper. Decorate the shoes with markers and Crayola Glitter Glue. Use patterns and designs to fit the personality of the shoes' owners. Dry.

2. Cut out the shoes with Crayola Scissors. Use a Crayola Glue Stick to attach them in an interesting pattern on poster board.

3. Play a game to figure out which shoe print matches which family member. Or make double shoe prints and keep one for a match-up game.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Glitter Glue— WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD—Small parts. Not for children under 3 years. Not for use on skin.

Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.

Interesting Info

During the Middle Ages fashionable men wore long, pointy shoes called poulaines. Some shoes were 2 feet (61 cm) in length. Men tied the tips to their knees with strings to keep from tripping.
