Homework Zone Pencil Holder
Create a rotating 4-sided pencil holder that tells what’s up at your desk! Is it a homework zone? An art zone? Are you HOMEwork FREE? Or are you just hanging out?
1. Start with a recycled carton. Ask an adult to help you cut off the top half.
2. Measure and cut Crayola Color Surge™ Paper so each piece is as wide as the carton, but taller than the height.
3. Bend each piece to make a fold line to show where the top of the pencil holder will be.
4. Use Color Surge Markers to design the space below the fold line. Write a label for each side to describe what you will be doing at your desk: HOMEWORK ZONE, ART STUDIO, HOMEwork FREE, HANGING OUT, or whatever you like to do at your desk.
5. Cut strips from the top of each designed piece down to the fold line. Turn the paper over to add bright designs to the back of each strip.
6. Turn the paper over. For curled edges, roll each strip around a colored pencil. Fold for angular edges.
7. Lightly glue pieces to the sides of the carton. You’re ready for action!
Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.
Recycled Containers—Must be clean and safe. Do not use containers that contained bleach or other harmful chemicals (for example, household cleaners, dishwasher or laundry detergents). Do not use recycled metal cans that have sharp edges (for example, lids removed by household can openers).
Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.
