Knock First!

Why

Let everyone know what you think before they knock! Create fun door hangers to pass on messages to those who dare to enter your space.

Steps

1. With a Crayola Cutter, cut Crayola White Color Explosion™ Paper in half vertically (the tall way) so you can make two door hangers out of one piece. For each hanger, use the White Color Explosion Marker to draw a circle large enough to go over a doorknob. Cut out the circle with your Cutter. It’s perfect for making interior cuts! You could make an S-shaped loop for hanging the other one if you like.

2. Next, decide on the theme for your hangers. You may want to choose a picture or design that goes around the curved hanger.

3. Start decorating! Color in some areas, leaving other parts white. Use the black marker to outline parts of your art and add details that really stand out.

4. Cut out around the door hangers to make unique shapes. You’re ready to display them! Having fun? You could design sets with messages that suit different people, seasons, and holidays!

Where & When

"This is an easy and creative way for students to define their own space—literally! And they’re not the same old rectangles. "
Mark E., YMCA after-school child care supervisor.

"Our family enjoys making projects like these. We have signs for all the rooms in the house. It’s fun to see the messages the children invent! "
Carol C., mother of 7-, 9-, and 12-year-olds.

Interesting Info

Doorknobs originated in the middle 1800s and were first made of porcelain and glass. They are collected today by many people and can be found in clear as well as the colors of amber (light brown), green, pink, and sometimes blue! New doorknobs are usually gold- or silver-colored metal.
