Magic Slipper

Why

Children slip right into their imaginations when they pretend. What could be better than magical journeys with colorful, fantasy slippers?

Steps

1. Imagine owning a pair of slippers that could take you anywhere...even places that exist in your dreams. What would those slippers look like? Using Crayola® Twistables™ Crayons on white construction paper, draw your magical slipper. Use your imagination.

2. Cover your work area with recycled newspaper. Use Crayola Washable Watercolors and Watercolor Brushes to paint over the crayon drawing. Try a wash of color (lots of water and paint) for your slipper's background color. Your crayon drawing will show through the watercolor.

3. When the watercolor is dry, cut out your magic slipper with Crayola Scissors.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Where & When

"My cousin has such a vivid imagination. She told me the most fantastic stories about places she'd like to go."
Felicia T., cousin of 9-year-old.

"The Magic Slipper was just what the neighborhood kids needed to jump-start their fantasies on a dreary day."
Carson F., dad of kids ages 7 and 12.

Interesting Info

Magic slippers remind people of magic carpets. In Turkish mosques, every family in the village has its own carpet. These carpets, which are definitely not magic but can be as old as 400 years, still may have their vivid colors.
