Outdoor Island-Hopping Game

Ready to go island hopping? Use your Crayola® Washable Sidewalk Paint Kit to create your own fun, tropical paradise (or peril) game!

1. What kinds of islands would you like to visit? Tropical? Mountainous? Snowy? Rugged? Flat? Use Crayola Erasable Colored Pencils to sketch several different islandson a piece of white paper. Draw as if you were in an airplane looking down on them.

2. Ask an adult to help you find a safe, large, dry area of concrete or asphalt sidewalk or driveway on which to play Island Hopping. Ask permission before you paint. Test a small area to make sure the paint does not stain. Use paint on surfaces at least 6 months old.

3. Use the sidewalk paint, a Crayola Paint Roller, and Crayola So Big Brush to paint the islands you sketched. Leave enough jumping space between each island to make your game challenging. The game works best with two to four players.

4. On each island, paint three areas: Two "happy zones" which include bonus points or a reward such as an extra turn. One a "forbidden zone" with a penalty, such as loss of a turn or return to start. Give each island a name if you like. Add sharks, ships, or hurricanes in the water. Let paint air dry.

5. Create tossing bags for each player with recycled white cotton socks. You could pretend the tossing bags are birds, snakes, butterflies, or even bird poop! Cover your art area with newspaper. Decorate each sock differently with Crayola® Fabric Markers. Crayola® Fabric Markers stain clothing and surfaces, CLOSE ADULT SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED. Ask an adult to dry the socks on the highest dryer setting for 30 minutes to set the color.

6. Tie knots in each sock so they throw easily. You and your friends are now ready to play Island Hopping. Make up your own rules, or use these to start.

7. Decide which island you would like to hop to first. One player at a time tosses a sock toward the chosen island. If your sock misses, your turn is over. If your sock lands on a happy zone or a forbidden zone, hop to the island, pick up your sock and follow the instructions. After everybody has had a turn trying for that island, it is time to hop to the next one. Stand on the island that you just visited, and repeat throwing the bag. Play continues until someone successfully visits all the islands.

8. Play your game over and over. After 2 weeks, wash off the paint with a garden hose-if the rain didn't already wash your islands away! Then you're ready to draw a new game.
