Pretend You're a Cave Painter

Why

Create your own cave paintings! A long time ago people made art by painting on the walls of caves.

Steps

1. Find out about cave paintings, rock paintings, and other art created by early peoples in Europe, Africa, the Americas, or elsewhere in the world. One of France's national treasures are the Cro-Magnon underground cave paintings done more than 20,000 years ago.

2. Tear off a large piece from a brown paper bag. Crumple the bag and then flatten it to resemble the texture of a cave wall.

3. Draw designs such as people, cows, horses, and other symbols using Crayola® Multicultural Markers.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Interesting Info

Did you know that the first known inhabitants of France were people called the Neanderthals? They walked upright, and had strong jawlines and thick bodies. They lived simply, hunting in the forest with tools made of stones and bones.
