Ribbon Roadway

Why

Follow this Ribbon Roadway to green pastures, your last vacation, or anywhere your kids' imaginations take them. The more details the better.

Steps

1. Arrange wide ribbon on green construction paper to resemble a winding road. Cut ribbon with Crayola® Scissors and attach it with a Crayola Glue Stick.

2. Using Crayola Washable Markers and Crayola Crayons, draw scenes and signs along your road. Imagine a rural area with barns and horses, buildings in another country, or use snapshots or travel brochures to design accurate scenery for a place you've never been. For more challenging fun, look up geographic areas and design accurate scenery in a place you've never been.

3. Crayola Glitter Glue is a good way to add highlights. Draw a center line down the middle of the road or outline drawings.

4. Add props such as small plastic cars, animals, and trees. Place your Ribbon Roadway on cardboard so you can enjoy hours of creative fun.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project.

Glitter Glue— WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD—Small parts. Not for children under 3 years. Not for use on skin.

Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.

String-Like Materials—Includes string, raffia, lacing, yarn, ribbon, and other similar material. Children 3 years and younger should not be given any string-like material that is longer than 12 inches. Close adult supervision is essential whenever children use string-like material. When crafts are to be worn around the necks of children 8 years and younger, attach the ends of the “string-like material” with clear adhesive tape, which allows easy release of the bond if the craft becomes entangled or caught on equipment. For children older than 8 years, the ends of the “string-like material” may be tied and knotted.

Where & When

"Each child created a different part of town, and then we linked all the roadways together. The planning, organization, and creative processes were all engaged in this one project."
Frank T., neighborhood center volunteer.

"Every night of a road trip, our kids re-created the day's highlights. We now have a scenic record of our vacation."
Deshawn Q., dad of three kids ages 7 to 13.

Interesting Info

Road signs communicate information by their shapes, colors, and placement. Warning signs are always yellow diamonds. Only stop signs are octagonal. Yield signs are placed with the point of the triangle facing down, while railroad crossings and civil defense signs are always white circles with black lettering.
