Strings of Pretend Paper
Loud blasts from firecrackers scare both human and other creatures alike for Lunar New Year, Independence Day, and other celebrations. Just the sight of a bright string of pretend firecrackers can set a festive mood for holiday fun.
1. Cut Crayola Black Color Explosion™ Paper in half for every two large "firecrackers" you intend to make. Cut the paper into quarters for smaller ones. Cut foil into small squares. You will use two pieces between each firecracker and more on the top and bottom of the string.
2. Decorate each paper using Black Color Explosion™ Markers—you get lots of surprising colors with just one marker! Choose decorations to fit the occasion. For example, copy Chinese characters for the Lunar New Year. Draw the animal of the year and/or the animal of the year of your birth from the Chinese astrological chart. Use patriotic or seasonal symbols for other holidays.
3. Add extra sparkle to your designs with Crayola Glitter Glue. Air-dry the glue.
4. Wrap each rectangle into a cylinder and glue the edge. Clip open ends of the rolls with spring clothespins to hold them in place until the glue dries.
5. With the help of an adult, thread a long yarn into a yarn needle. Leave some yarn at the top for hanging your decoration. Then poke the needle into the top side of a firecracker and through to the bottom side.
6. Thread two foil squares (back to back) on the yarn. Scrunch up foil between each firecracker. Alternate sizes of firecrackers on the yarn. Repeat until all firecrackers and foil squares are strung on the yarn. Cut off the needle, leaving extra yarn hanging at the bottom.
7. To make a dangling medallion, cut two small circles and several thin strips from Color Explosion paper. Decorate them with your theme, much as you did the firecrackers. Use tiny accordion folds to crimp the strips.
8. Sandwich the ends of the yarn and crimped strips between the two circles. Glue together. Air-dry the glue before hanging. Spirits beware!

For children older than 8 years, the ends of the “string-like material” may be tied and knotted.
