Surprise! Card
Want to say "Happy Birthday!" with a splash? Or celebrate your country's independence or say "get well soon"? Wishes jump out of this card!
1. Fold white construction paper in half the long way. Open and cut on the fold using Crayola® Scissors. Later, you will glue one of these long, thin rectangles into your card for a pop-up surprise.
2. What kinds of words or pictures do you want to pop up inside your card? Does the birthday person have a hobby or favorite color? What about colorful balloons or a birthday cake with candles? Or is the birthday a national holiday, such as your country's independence day or a leader's birthday?
3. Use Crayola Changeables to draw a birthday scene and message on one long rectangle. With the Changeables™ wand, create magic with the colors of your message.
4. Trim along the top edges of your drawing. Fold the paper like an accordion. Make an odd number of folds, at least five. Punch holes in the bottom of each folded section. Try to line up the holes. Lace thin ribbon through the holes and tie. If the ribbon curls, curl it with your scissors.
5. Fold another whole sheet of white construction paper in half, then in half the opposite way. This is the outer part of your pop-up birthday card. Use your Changeables and wand to create a drawing and message on the front of your card.
6. With Crayola School Glue, attach the first and last tabs of the accordion-folded art to the inside of your card. Some of the design could stick out the top if you like. Press the card closed, making sure that your inner art is folding correctly in the center of your card. Place a heavy book or another clean weight on top of your card. Air dry.
7. Open the card to add designs or words. You will soon surprise someone!
Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.
Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.
String-Like Materials—Includes string, raffia, lacing, yarn, ribbon, and other similar material. Children 3 years and younger should not be given any string-like material that is longer than 12 inches. Close adult supervision is essential whenever children use string-like material. When crafts are to be worn around the necks of children 8 years and younger, attach the ends of the “string-like material” with clear adhesive tape, which allows easy release of the bond if the craft becomes entangled or caught on equipment. For children older than 8 years, the ends of the “string-like material” may be tied and knotted.
