Swirly Model Magic® Snails

Why

Snails are fascinating creatures. Shape several swirly shells with Crayola Model Magic®. They’re SO easy to make!

Steps

1. Have you watched snails early in the morning? Snails move primarily at night, when they feed on plants, mate with other snails, and lay their eggs. They have beautiful, spiral shells. Some are pointy, and some are more flat. They range in size from the size of a pinpoint to 15 inches (38 cm) for land snails.

2. To create your own pretend snails, combine different colors of Crayola Model Magic Naturals. Roll out a strand that is thick on one end and thin on the other. Starting with the thin end, create a spiral.

3. Roll out a thick snail body in a contrasting color. Attach the spiral shell to the body. Model Magic fresh from the pack sticks to itself! Add two tentacles and tiny beady eyes. Could this be the start of a science project?

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project.

Crayola Modeling Materials including Crayola Model Magic®, Model Magic Fusion™, Crayola Air-Dry Clay, and Crayola Dough With Small Parts— WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD—

  • Unless sealed with a water-resistant glaze, do not make projects exposed to or immersed in water, such as boats or outdoor bird feeders. They would disintegrate when exposed to moisture.
  • Crayola Dough—contains gluten (wheat flour) as an ingredient. Crayola Air-Dry Clay, Crayola Model Magic, and Model Magic Fusion are gluten-free. However, they are produced on the same machinery as Crayola Dough which does contain gluten. Although the machines are cleaned prior to the start of each production run, there is a slight possibility that trace amounts of gluten from Crayola Dough may be present in the other modeling compound products. Where & When

"My grandson and I collected snails from a pond to put in an aquarium. He made some snails of his own to take home!"
Henry T., grandpa of age 7.

"We found a big garden snail while we were weeding our class garden. It was a great model for the kids’ sculptures."
Rosa R., after-school volunteer.

Interesting Info

Snails each contain both sexes (they are both boys and girls). They might move slowly, but they’re pretty extreme travelers. Because of the suction they create, snails can travel upside down. Their slime protects their bodies so much that snails can travel along the sharp edge of a razor blade without hurting themselves.
