Two-Toned Desk Organizer

Why

Make a practical gift for someone you love or for yourself by reusing film canisters or other containers! Play with fun designs and colors to customize these handy desk accessories.

Steps

1. Paper clips, crayons, push pins—every desk has lots of little stuff to keep organized. These little containers are perfect to keep any desk neat!

2. To make two-toned holders like those shown in the picture, roll two coils of Crayola Model Magic® Fusion™ modeling compound. Lay the coils next to each other so that they stick together. Roll these double-coils around a film canister or other recycled container. Repeat with the other groups of colors with two or more canisters—or pick containers of different sizes for even more versatility.

3. Roll three different-sized Fusion balls. Set a film canister on top of a ball and flatten them so they are each a different height. Snuggle them together so they stick to each other.

4. Choose a color or two that goes with all the colors you used, such as white, Glow in the Dark, or Silver Crystal. Roll a very thick coil of this and wrap around the bottom of the project to cover the balls under the canisters. Add even more decorations such as balls, shapes, or little curly coils to make a sophisticated or silly desk accessory! Fusion dries to the touch overnight and dries completely in 2 or 3 days. Fill your set with school or office supplies.

Where & When

"We made these as a community service project, using several types of recycled containers. We donated the desk sets to a homeless shelter to use as welcome gifts for new families."
Cirus P., Saturday art school leader.

"My kids made these for teacher gifts and filled them with Crayola products. They were a BIG hit!"
Luis D., father of 8- and 11-year-olds.

Interesting Info

Projects like this, that reuse an item that would otherwise be thrown away, are a really important step in helping to take care of the planet. Plastics that are thrown away, instead of being reused or recycled, go into landfills and pollute the Earth! Keep doing your part!
