Whirly Curly Snake

Why

Ssssnakessss are sssslithery creatures. They have flicking tongues and beautifully patterned backs. Create your own ssssslithering ssssnake with ssscisssorsss.

Steps

1. Did you know that most snakes are harmless and actually help people? Find out more about these ancient reptiles. Watch these slithering creatures if you can!

2. Are you ready to make your own Whirly Curly Snake? With a paper plate, trace a circle on paper using Crayola® Erasable Colored Pencils. You could even use a thin paper plate to make your snake.

3. Draw a snake's head at the center of the circle. From the head, draw a continuous line, going farther and farther to the outside, until you reach the edge of your circle. Draw eyes on the snake's head. Color its body a solid shade.

4. Use your imagination to erase shapes on the snake's back. You could make diamonds, circles, or other patterns. Create zig-zag lines or even stripes. Use your colored pencils to add accent colors where you erased. Outline the designs so they stand out even better.

5. Cut out the snake with Crayola Scissors. Just follow the circular line from tail to head.

6. Punch a hole in your snake's head. Run yarn through the hole to hang up your snake. Watch your Whirly Curly Snake twist and spin when you blow on it!

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.

String-Like Materials—Includes string, raffia, lacing, yarn, ribbon, and other similar material. Children 3 years and younger should not be given any string-like material that is longer than 12 inches. Close adult supervision is essential whenever children use string-like material. When crafts are to be worn around the necks of children 8 years and younger, attach the ends of the “string-like material” with clear adhesive tape, which allows easy release of the bond if the craft becomes entangled or caught on equipment. For children older than 8 years, the ends of the “string-like material” may be tied and knotted.
