Protect kids-and yourself-from the sun with these home-grown garden hats. Summer fun is made in the shade with practical and creative crafts like this.
1.
All living things need sunlight to grow, even you! Too much sun can be harmful, though, so people wear hats for protection. This Shady Garden Hat is modeled after Australian bush hats and safari hats. Make your own colorful version for when your walkabouts take you out in the sun.
2.
Ask an adult or friend to help you make your hat. Open a newspaper to the middle and remove two full sheets. Place the newspaper on top of your head. Press the paper down so it molds to the shape of your head. While you hold the paper in place, your assistant wraps masking tape around the newspaper, going all the way around, across your forehead and over your ears. Go around twice to be sure the tape holds.
3.
Remove the newspaper from your head. The newspaper stays molded in the shape of a hat. Choose the style hat you want. For example, if you like, roll the paper brim bowler style. You can also shape and trim it cowboy style, or fringe the brim by tearing the paper. Leave enough paper to protect your face and neck from the sun. Be creative!
4.
Spread more newspaper over your work area. Paint your hat with Crayola® Washable Paint and Crayola So Big Brushes. Dry.
5.
To make a fancy chapeau, decorate your hat with craft items such as ribbons, pompons, or craft feathers. Attach with Crayola School Glue.
