  • Obtain corn or other seeds that sprout easily.

    1. Line a clear plastic drinking glass with a wet paper towel. Between the towel and the glass, place several corn kernels.

    2. On a self-stick label, write the date and your name with a Crayola® Colored Pencil. Attach the label to the outside of the glass.

    3. Moisten the towel each day with a spray bottle filled with water. In a few days, the seeds will start to sprout.

    4. Each day, draw what the sprouts look like, using Crayola® Washable Markers. Make a book or a chart to show their growth.

    5. If possible, plant the sprouts outdoors.

  • Each day, prepare one new glass. Compare the daily growth stages. Help children observe the different parts of the sprouts and name them.
  • Sprout beans or flower seeds. Plant them in soil. With sunshine and water, they are likely to flower.
  • Visit a farm where corn is grown. Grind dry corn with a mortar and pestle. Visit a mill or bakery. Make and eat cornbread, tortillas, or other multicultural treats using corn flour.
