Set-Up Ideas
What is a language area? It’s a relaxing, quiet place to curl up with a book, write a story, play with flannel board figures, or listen to a recording. Children gravitate to this area when there are soft places to sit, appealing books on display with their covers showing, materials for writing and illustrating their own tales, and interesting recordings.
Group experience stories–children’s words from field trips, events, or children’s imaginations–are recorded on a large chart so small groups can read what they wrote.
Computers often are placed in this area so children can write their own stories, send e-mail messages, and search for information on the Internet.
