VISUAL ARTS & LITERACY II
Creative Connections With Vocabulary

"Creative Connections With Vocabulary" is the second literacy guide in the Dream-Makers series. This guide contains twelve lessons that help teachers engage children in learning about and comprehend engaging, yet challenging, words specific to expressions they observe in faces. Additional lessons in the guide help children collaborate and creatively "spin" webs of words, phrases, and definitions related to word context as they construct art that can be displayed in the classroom and still other lessons teach children to design and create a game that includes sculpting a modeled head, developing vocabulary definition cards, envelopes, and a storage box to track word-building efforts - all of which support and encourage vocabulary development.

Remarks from teachers who tested the lessons in Creative Connections With Vocabulary:

"I think students learn best through hands-on activities. I particularly like the 'interactive' word wall that my co-worker thought up. The students are thoroughly engaged making up sentences with the 'no-excuse' words and applying them to the mural. We plan to create additional murals and share them with the kindergarten and first grade classes."-Elyse Martin and Sadie Everett, Jordan Community School, Chicago, Illinois

"My students appeared interested and motivated to respond to all critical thinking questions as we explored the word 'order' as it relates to math and other real-life situations. After the lesson I heard comments whenever the word 'order' was used or inferred in other lessons. They were able to make a connection!"-Bobbi Yancey, College Oaks Elementary School, Lake Charles, Louisiana
