On January 23, 1849, Dr. Elizabeth Backwell became the first woman to receive a medical degree. She received it from the Medical Institution of Geneva, New York, and she graduated at the top of her class. In 1857, Dr. Blackwell opened the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children. She won recognition for her work with people who had medical problems brought about by the Civil War.
