City of Rainbows

Why

Each city in the world has a skyline all its own. Use the rainbow of hues in Crayola® Overwriters™ to create a colorful city of your dreams.

Steps

1. Find skyline pictures of nearby and faraway cities. How do they look the same? What makes them different? With your classmates, list characteristics of cities: buildings, people, transportation, factories, offices, parks, and government buildings.

2. Think about how a city works. What services does a city need to run smoothly?

3. Design your own urban area! Use your imagination to lay out the background with Crayola Overwriters markers. Create large shapes, such as mountains, with black, brown, red, or purple. Outline the shores of lakes, rivers, or oceans. What effects do these natural elements have on cities?

4. Use the striking Over Colors to add bright details to your drawing. Use shadows for depth. Try unusual patterns for interest. Create a rainbow of hues in your city.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Adaptations

  • Compare and contrast city and country life.
  • Create a flow chart showing how people living in a city depend on each other for survival.
  • Brainstorm a list of the jobs and professions that are found in cities.
  • Research a city to find out why it was built on its site. Who were the founders? What things were its main sources of commerce?
  • Does your drawing show realistic urban details? Your teacher could use it to find out how much you know and understand about cities.
