Cookie Creations

Why

Measurement and cooking meet creativity with these illustrated recipes for cookies.

Steps

1. Read several recipes for cookies, baked or unbaked. Compare ingredients. Make different versions of the same cookie. Find out how ingredients affect cookie taste, texture, and shape.

2. Imagine what your favorite cookie recipe might contain. On a large index card (dictated on story paper for younger children and special needs students), print the name of your cookie recipe with Crayola® Colored Pencils. List ingredients and their amounts to create exactly the kind of cookie you want.

3. Draw a picture of each ingredient next to the list with Crayola Crayons, Multicultural Crayons, and Colored Pencils.

4. Draw a picture of the finished cookie on the other side of your recipe.

5. To practice measurement, make the cookies and taste test the recipes. Make a chart of favorites and reasons.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project. Observe children closely and intervene as necessary to prevent potential safety problems and ensure appropriate use of arts and crafts materials. Some craft items, particularly beads and buttons, are potential choking hazards for young children. Avoid use of such small parts with children younger than 3 years. Craft items such as scissors, push pins and chenille sticks may have sharp points or edges. Avoid use of materials with sharp points by children younger than 4 years. Read all manufacturers' safety warnings before using arts and craft supplies.

Adaptations

  • Write recipes for foods that come from islands, mountains, or deserts. Find out what foods grow in those places.
  • Write recipes for birthday cakes, salads, or any other foods.
  • Research cookie recipes from various cultures. What are the similarities? Differences?
