Revisiting Casey at the Bat

Why

Successes and failures are part of achievement. Share the poem "Casey at the Bat" then create original drawings of yourself working toward a goal.

Steps

1. Read Casey at the Bat. With your classmates, discuss the poem. What do you think Casey might do next? How could he be more successful? What goals do you expect to meet? Why do you set goals for yourself? How do you feel when you achieve a goal?

2. Cover a work area with recycled newspaper. Use Crayola® Washable Markers to color white paper. Spritz the paper with a wet paintbrush so the wet marker colors blend into each other. Lift and tilt the wet paper to watch the color run. Spritz until your background is as colorful and free as you like. Dry on a flat surface.

3. Think of a goal to set for yourself. It might be athletic, academic, artistic, or personal.

4. Use Crayola Washable Markers to draw yourself in the process of achieving your goal. Draw facial expression and body language to show how you will feel when you are successful.

Adaptations

  • Have you ever failed at something that was important to you? Successful people learn from their mistakes. Fold a piece of paper in half. On one half draw yourself showing how you felt when you weren't successful. On the other half draw a picture of what you can do to prepare to try again. How can you learn from your mistakes?
  • What is your favorite activity? Draw yourself as you felt when you were learning how to do that activity. Did you have setbacks? If so, how did you overcome them? Write a poem, play, or short story about your experiences.
  • Interview a successful person. What challenges did she or he overcome on the way to achieving goals? What did the person learn from mistakes?
