Spelling Snake

Why

Have fun practicing your spelling words in a slithery, slippery new way! Use Crayola® Gel Markers to make a swirling Spelling Snake!

Steps

1. Write each of your spelling words-or any new words you are learning-with Crayola Gel Markers on brightly colored paper. Write the words without looking at your list.

2. Check your list, a dictionary, or ask a friend to make sure each word is spelled correctly.

3. Cut out around each word with Crayola Scissors.

4. Arrange the paper pieces in the shape of a snake. Attach them to a different color of paper with a Crayola Glue Stick.

5. Draw in the head and tongue of your Spelling Snake.

Safety Guidelines

Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project.

Small Parts— WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD—Small parts. Not for children under 3 years.

Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.

Adaptations

  • Special needs students might spell words orally while a partner writes. Older students write words in cursive, and add word prefixes and/or suffixes.
  • Put words in alphabetical order, or write words broken into syllables. Check a dictionary to be sure. Samuel Johnson, who was born September 18, 1709, created the first English language dictionary. Create your own dictionary of new vocabulary words.
  • Rainbow spelling is another colorful way to learn spelling words. Students write spelling words in one color, then go over the word several times in various other colors. Crayola Overwriters Markers and Colored Pencils work great for rainbow spelling!
