Dine's Dark & Light Delights lesson plan

Take an extraordinary look at ordinary objects, using oil pastels to experiment with color and value in the style of Pop artist Jim Dine.

    Jim Dine is an American artist whose work ranges from sculptural forms to drawings, paintings, and assemblages. Born on June 16, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Jim Dine is classified as a Pop artist, largely because the subjects of his creations are usually household items such as tools and housecoats. His most famous series of drawings and paintings include hearts and robes, which are most likely autobiographical. Students research Jim Dine's creative work, examining subject matter, use of color, and gradations of value.

    On white construction paper, use Crayola® Oil Pastels to draw a simple outline of a household object, such as a fork, hammer, or toothbrush. As Dine did, use one or two colors plus black and white. Start at the top of the object and color in your drawing with dark, intense color. Move down the object, making it lighter and lighter until the bottom of the object, where it remains white.

    Color in the background of the drawing in the opposite way, making the bottom very dark and the top very light. Make the changes in value (darkness and lightness) very gradual, so there are no obvious lines in the drawing, much like Dine's style.

Adaptations

  • In teams of two, students research the life of other well-known pop artists. Compare and contrast these artists and their lives with that of Jim Dine. Organize research into an electronic format for class viewing.
  • Jim Dine also created sculptures that included tools, as well as other household objects. Students collect recycled household items, arrange them on a block of wood and paint the collection with Crayola Portfolio Series™ Acrylic Paint.
  • For Valentine's Day, students research artistic representations of hearts and create an assortment of hearts in the manner of Jim Dine. Provide a bulletin board in the classroom to post the original artwork.
  • Students create an autobiographical drawing in the form of Dine's style. To accompany this artwork, students compose a descriptive paragraph to assist the viewer with an explanation of the artist.
  • Students experiment with color value using different media such as oil pastels, colored pencils, watercolor, and tempera paint. Students post to a class blog their observations of such things as how each medium varies, different techniques that can be used to control the value of each, and other observations that each student makes throughout the process.
