HOW TO MAKE
  1. With an adult, choose a large, outdoor paved area that is clean, safe, and free from traffic.
  2. Decide where to locate the relay starting points and turnaround areas. With a Sidewalk Paint Sprayer, mark two identical relay courses side by side. Make them as interesting as possible. Spray wide and narrow paths. Create slaloms or places to jump across. Draw tight curves and long straights.
  3. Design a winner’s circle to record best times with Sidewalk Chalk.
HOW TO PLAY
  1. Divide group into two equal teams. Players decide running order within each team. Appoint a timer for each team.
  2. All players line up behind the starting line. All chant "one, two, three, go!" to start the race.
  3. One runner from each team enters and runs the course, turns around and runs back to tag the next player. The next person may not run until tagged.
  4. The team who completes the course first wins. Identify the best individual times for both teams, too.
VARIATIONS
  • After the races, design medals or certificates like these for team and individual winners.
    Ribbons, Rosettes, & Medals
    Berry Best Award
    Badge of Honor Medallion
  • Relays can be simple or creative. Be imaginative! Choose a theme and decorate the course accordingly. Some possible themes to urge runners to move quickly: sharks, crocodiles, cacti, porcupines!
  • Just add water! Have each player on the team carry a paper cup of water through the course and back, pouring it into a marked container before the next player can run. The winning team fills the container to the line first.
  • Accessorize! Have each runner don sunglasses, hat, vest, and belt at the start, run the course and remove items before next person on team does the same.
  • Create team uniforms by decorating T-shirts with Crayola Fabric Markers.
  • Make "batons" with Crayola Model Magic®. Shape them so they are easy for a runner to hand to the next person in line. Air-dry for 24 hours. Cover both sides with a glaze to keep them clean. Just mix equal parts Crayola No-Run School Glue and water. Air-dry the glaze before handling.
