Every
Year, A Self-Portrait Tip: Start a new family tradition. Each year, when your child's birthday or other annual event rolls around, in addition to taking pictures, ask your child to draw a self-portrait, or even a portrait of the whole family. Save these treasures, and for year later the memories will come to life again!
Arts in the Parks
Tip: You and your children can find (and make) art outdoors.
Take a nature walk. Look around a park. You're likely to find statues,
wood carvings, trees bent in interesting shapes. Trace the shadows made
by climbers on the playground. Do crayon rubbings of leaf patterns. Decorate
a newspaper hat at a picnic table, and you'll draw a crowd!
Expressing
Emotions and Thought Through Art
Tip: What does your child remember best about last summer?
A roller coaster or boat ride? A scary night in the tent? A visit from
a dear relative? Strong emotions, such as fear, love, or excitement, are
great resources for exploring with the arts. Urge children to express
their thoughts and feelings visually. Personal experience create the most
powerful and meaningful artwork.
