Tips & Tricks

Tips on taking your coloring to the edge

Pressure Shading

The easiest way to shade is to adjust the pressure on your pencil or marker—more pressure for darker shades and less for lighter. One method is to shade the entire coloring area evenly with your lightest color value then add layers of darker shading. To intensify your shading, try adding a darker color to your shaded area and blend them together smoothly.

Hatching/Crosshatching

Hatching – drawing closely spaced parallel lines—is another way to apply shading. Wherever you use this method, that area will appear shaded while the remaining area will look highlighted. To intensify this effect, draw intersecting lines on top of your hatch marks. This is known as crosshatching. Crosshatch lines can either be straight or follow the shape of what you are coloring.
