Beyond the Boundaries

Students create their own cloud formations with inspiration from the Caldecott Honor book, Sector 7, by David Wiesner.

  • Directions

    1. Sector 7, by David Wiesner, is a wonderful book that tells a story through pictures. Read the pictures with the class. Discuss the story about a boy who makes friends with a cloud and ends up creating cool cloud shapes and causing a cloud revolt. It’s beautifully illustrated and thought provoking for young readers.
    2. The artwork shown in this lesson plan is a recreation from a scene in the book. Students can choose a scene to recreate or use their imagination and create their own unique clouds.
    3. Students create their cloud figures with Crayola® Model Magic. Model Magic can be shaped, rolled, pinched and cut with scissors. Set the clouds aside to dry while working on the background.
    4. On a piece of white paper, students draw the background for their picture using Crayola Colored Pencils. The backgrounds shown in the book are of the New York City skyline. Students can choose the city skyline or create their own.
    5. Students pull apart cotton balls and glue them to the sky of their background picture with Crayola School Glue.
    6. Take the Model Magic clouds and glue them to the cotton ball clouds.
    7. Students write captions or a paragraph to go along with their cloud illustrations.
    8. Hang the clouds around the classroom or from the ceiling.

    LA: Explain how specific aspects of a text’s illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting).

    LA: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

    SCI: Develop, use, and share representations of weather conditions to describe changes over time and identify patterns.

    VA: Use different media, techniques, and processes to communicate ideas, experiences, and stories.

    VA: Select and use subject matter, symbols, and ideas to communicate meaning.

    VA: Identify connections between the visual arts and other disciplines in the curriculum.

    VA: Use visual structures of art to communicate ideas.

  • Adaptations

    Combine language arts with science. Review the types of clouds with students. When students are creating their cloud illustrations, have them include the type of cloud they have chosen to use and why.

    Stretch the concept even further. Working in small groups, have students think of another form of nature they can reshape. Instead of clouds, use flowers, leaves, desert sand, water, the possibilities are endless. Students create a story and illustrate.
