Color Cubes

Transfer your knowledge of the color wheel to a color cube!

    1. Sol Lewitt was considered a Minimalist. Minimalism is a style of art that used simple forms, hard edges, and pure color. The artists of this movement rejected the spontaneous gestures, personal expression, and subject matter of the Abstract Expressionist. Look at the painting “Wall Drawing #1256: Five Pointed Stars” by Sol Lewitt. Compare the simplicity of the image and bold impact of the two color combinations.
    2. Students make a cube template with sides measuring 8 x 8 in. (20 x 20 cm) and then cut out with Crayola® Pointed Tip Scissors.
    3. Study the color wheel and learn about color schemes. •Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Colors •Warm and Cool Colors •Monochromatic Colors •Complementary Colors, Analogous Colors, Triadic Colors, Split-Complementary Colors, Rectangle Colors, Square Colors •Neutral Colors
    4. Students choose six color schemes to illustrate each side of their cube. Draw a simple shape in the center of a piece of 5 x 5 in. (12 x 12 cm) paper and then use carbon paper to trace onto each side of the template.
    5. Using Crayola Washable Markers, color each side carefully.
    6. Fold the tabs of the template and use a Crayola Glue Stick to close shut.
    7. Display cubes stacked or hanging from ceiling.
  • Standards

    LA: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade level topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.

    MATH: Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them.

    VA: Apply visual organization strategies to design and produce a work of art, design, or media that clearly communicates information or ideas.

  • Adaptations

    In music, the Minimalists composed compositions that emphasize simple melodies, stress repetition and rhythmic patterns and reduce expressive reference. Let students listen to the music of Philip Glass, Steve Reich and John Adams. While listening to the music, allow students draw lines or patterns that they feel represent the melodies. Use Crayola Markers on white paper to complete drawings. Afterward, hang artwork up and critique with the class.

    Read the book, “A Bad Case of the Stripes”, by David Shannon. Have students draw a self portrait with Crayola Colored Pencils. Use a black colored pencil to draw stripes across your face, body, etc. If you curve the stripes you will have the appearance of being three-dimensional. Color stripes with a vibrant color scheme. Do not use the same color for any two adjacent lines. Hang the striped selfies in the hall for Eat Your Vegetables Day on June 17th!
