Correct Capitalization

Students each come up with at least one example of a fun 'quiz' drawing for their peers to check to see if they know the correct way to either capitalize or not that noun!

  • Directions

    1. To capitalize or not to capitalize. Which is it? Determining which nouns should be capitalized can be a tricky thing. Encourage students to think about the many ways capitalization provides the reader/listener more information.
    2. Using Crayola Crayons, Markers and/or Colored Pencils, challenge students to draw a picture of a self-selected noun on a piece of construction paper, leaving adequate space at the bottom of the drawing, about 2” (5 cm), to write that noun on the paper minus the first letter. Students may draw a blank line to help in saving space for the first letter.
    3. Instruct students to cut 2 small rectangles of construction paper and fold them both in half. On the outsides of each folded piece, write the first letter of their noun, one using a capital letter and one using lower case. On the inside, students are to draw a happy face for the correct letter, and a sad face for the incorrect letter. Glue both of these flaps, one on top of another in order to align with the rest of the word.
    4. If students get done early, they should be encouraged to create another; in this case, the more the merrier! When all students have completed at least one noun page, they can take turns sharing their artwork with classmates. If the students seem stuck, encourage a peer to provide hints, such as asking if that particular noun is a name, etc. The artist/creator should be the one to show the happy or sad face after the class has guessed the correct capitalization.
    5. Keep these original noun artworks in a common area in the classroom so that they can be brought out for review from time to time. Also considering adding to this collection throughout the school year. Various games in the style of game shows can easily be adapted to incorporate these beautiful artworks!

  • Adaptations

    Set a goal to have 100 noun pages by the 100th day of school!

    Collect a list of nouns that are special to the members of the class, such as other states they have lived in or family names. Publish them all together as a class noun book.

    Assign a vocabulary list to the class that is from another curricular area, such as a science list, and publish for the classroom library!

    Have students create appropriate notes, thank yous maybe to a recent field trip destination, but before the students mail them, add specific locations to your noun set, such as the street and town names. This can be sure that the correct capitalization for the addresses, as well as the notes, are correct and showcase your student skills!
