From Sun to Saturn & Beyond

Students research the planets in our solar system. Colorful Crayola Model Magic® creates an out-of-this-world 3-D science display!

  • Directions

    1. Students work with a partner and research the eight planets that travel around the sun. With Crayola Erasable Colored Pencils, list the planets, their distances from the sun, their sizes, and other physical features, such as moons, oceans, temperature ranges, or rings.
    2. Paint outer space. Cover the art area with recycled newspaper. Together, students paint cardboard with Crayola Washable Paint. Try layers of color, dry-brush strokes, and other techniques so that it looks like outer space. Air-dry the painting.
    3. Shape the solar system. Use Crayola Model Magic to make 3-D models of each planet and the sun. Choose different colors and sizes so that they look authentic. Make little flags on toothpicks to label the solar system.
    4. Put the display together. Attach the planets with Crayola School Glue in their correct order in relationship to the sun. Air-dry. Student groups present their model with the information about the planets and the sun to the class and share with their families.

    Label planets in two languages, English and another that students are now studying. Have student practice pronouncing the planets in both languages.

    Students re-create the planets of the solar system using a smaller scale in order to create a planet necklace. Poke a hole through each of the planets and string them on yarn.

    Working in small groups, students select a planet other than Earth to do in-depth research. Create a picture journal of what you would see and do if you could visit the planet. Additionally, students organize research into a written summary format to share with classmates.
