Klee Shape Castles

Combine simple shapes and splashes of color to create Klee-like castles.

  • Directions

    1. Have students work together to build castles at their tables using colorful blocks. Once done, let students discuss each other’s creation. Focus students on the simple shapes of the blocks such as: square, rectangle, triangle, circle.
    2. Show students “Castle and Sun” by Swiss artist Paul Klee. Klee was a Cubist. He mixed reality with his imagination. Encourage students to discuss the similarities between their block creations and the painting by Klee. Students should be able to address multiple shapes, various colors and subject matter.
    3. Invite students to create original castle designs using Crayola® Slick Stix on white paper. Wear a smock to protect clothing and cover your work surface with newspaper.
    4. Place water containers, brushes and Crayola Watercolor Paints out on tables. Students apply watercolor to their castle drawing in an expressive way. Place completed paintings on drying rack.
    5. Once art is dry, allow students discuss their artwork. Students can point out a successful aspect such as: a well crafted shape, a beautiful color, etc.

  • Adaptations

    Medieval Flags were often hung in castles or carried by knights into battle. These flags often contained coats of arms or other elements used for national identification. Some types of heraldic flags are: •Pennon-small elongated flag, either pointed or swallow-tailed •Banner-square or oblong and larger than the pennon. •Standard-tapers, usually from 4 feet down to 2 feet and the fly edge is rounded. •Pinsel-triangular in shape Have students choose a flag style that they prefer from the above list. Compare several Medieval flags. Show students paintings by Capodilista Codex. Notice the bold colors, simple and intricate designs, and symbols. Have students use Crayola Markers to create bold personal flags. Each student should create a flag that represents their personality, interests, life and design style. Display flags from the ceiling when complete.

    Read Mr. King’s Castle by Genevieve Cote to the students. Discuss the shapes Mr. King cuts out of the grass, his desire to have a bigger house and his helpful friends. Have students create their own castle using Crayola Construction Paper and Scissors. First cut out a large semi-circle.Next, cut out simple shapes to create a small house. Finally cut out simple shapes from the hill to add to the house to create a castle. Discuss positive and negative space with the students. Use Crayola Glue to glue paper pieces to a background.
