Nature's Golden Treasures

Pine cones, leaves, and other natural objects radiate when covered with gold Crayola® Premier™ Tempera and Glitter Glue. Create natural gifts with a decorative flair!

  • Grade 1
  • 30 to 60 minutes
  • Directions

    1. With an adult supervising, students collect fallen plant parts such as pinecones, seed pods, and leaves. Encourage the selection of varied and unusual shapes and textures. Wash hands when returning indoors.
    2. Ask students to cover their work areas with recycled newspaper. After spreading out their collection pieces, students identify the names of the trees and other plants from which the natural items fell.
    3. With supervision, students paint their plant material with gold Crayola Premier Tempera using Crayola Paint Brushes. Dry.
    4. Introduce students to Crayola Glitter Glue. Demonstrate how this product can be used to decorate their nature items using their imaginations. Allow time for students to experiment. Dry.
    5. Add a hanger of ribbon, raffia, string, or yarn. Students hang their artwork as ornaments, use as gift package decorations, or display for a holiday.
  • Standards

    LA: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade level topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

    MATH: Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes.

    SCI: Make observations that matter exists as different materials, which can be described and classified by their observable properties and their uses.

    SCI: Distinguish between opinions and evidence in determining whether objects in a given set occur naturally or are manufactured.

    VA: Use different media, techniques, and processes to communicate ideas, experiences, and stories.

  • Adaptations

    Organize a school yard field trip for students in the fall. When planning for the adventure, have students bring sketch pads, a plastic bag to hold their findings, and Crayola Slick Stix™ for sketching. Traveling in small groups with adult supervision, students discuss and sketch what they see. Encourage students to name the trees, leaves, pinecones, etc. that they are collecting. Return to the classroom with collections to discuss what was seen and found.

    Students work in small groups to identify similar items that they have sound. What geometric shapes can be seen in the collected items? Students identify the attributes of each of the geometric shapes to defend their thinking.

    Working in small groups, students discuss the items that they have chosen to collect. How many are made in nature, or natural, items? Are any man-made? If so, how can you tell?
