This is a creative way for kids to see information! Take some not-so-exciting statistics that students gather and make it a SMART masterpiece by adding data to an artwork!

    1. While investigating the gathering and use of statistics, discuss with students how statistics are determined, for example by taking a survey. Show an example of a circle graph and question students how to interpret the data. Have students ponder the use of statistics in everyday lives.
    2. Brainstorm with the class different topics that can be investigated and have them list specific questions that their survey will pose.
    3. Ask students to select a subject they are interested in gathering data on through the use of a survey. They may conduct this survey with family or friends, or on social media if allowed by school policy. Assign students to collect data.
    4. Once data collection is complete, have students decide on an appropriate picture that they could use the shape of as their chart. For example, if they surveyed classmates, they could draw the outline of a person. Using a ruler and Crayola Erasable Colored Pencils, students divide the person in half; in this case, one side for boys and one side for girls.
    5. Using different parts of the body, label the areas of questions that were asked; designate these using Crayola Markers or Colored Pencils. Students will determine percentages for each answer and estimate how much of each body part should be colored in. Allow students to determine how the areas will be contrasted, such as the male data may be colored in blue and the girl data colored in red.
    6. Allow class time for students to complete their graphs. Trade graphs between students and see if their peers can correctly estimate the survey information. Share with the class!

  • Adaptations

    Provide students with different sets of information that are directly linked and see how students compare them in a visual graph as described in this lesson.

    Assign students each a different part of geographic information about their community or school; engage the whole class in collaborating on a visual graph to incorporate all the data.
