FAQ

  • In 1958 the box of 64 Crayola Crayons was introduced. It was the first package to include a built-in sharpener design. We continue to manufacture this package design today in the 64 and 96 count Crayola Crayon package.

  • While we don't manufacture a specific sharpener for Crayola® Colored Pencils, hand-held sharpeners are the optimal choice for achieving a precise point. We recommend them over electric or crank-style sharpeners. Hand-held sharpeners with dual holes offer versatility for most standard-size and larger pencils.

    Recommended Sharpeners:

    • Standard-size colored pencils: Brass Bullet Pencil Sharpener and Chubby Pencil Sharpener. You can view these sharpeners on the NASCO website or call 800-558-9595.
    • Large-size Write Start Colored Pencils: Helix Hand-Held Sharpener with two holes. Find this product on Blick Art Materials using product code #21401-0100 or call 1-800-447-8192. Some eye pencil sharpeners from beauty supply stores may also work!

Note: Crayola Color Sticks don't need sharpening, but you can achieve a fine point with any handheld sharpener that has a 15mm opening.

  • Carnation pink and gray Crayola® Crayons are available in 24, 48, 64, 96, and 120-count boxes.

We also offer single-color boxes containing 12 carnation pink or gray in regular and large size crayons.

Please check for availability at your local office supply store or online at Amazon and Staples.

  • Recognizing a need in schools for safe and affordable wax crayons, Binney & Smith created the first box of eight Crayola Crayons in 1903. Sold for a nickel, this box included red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, and black.

The Crayola name was coined by Alice Binney, wife of company founder Edwin Binney and a former schoolteacher. It combines the French word for "chalk" ("craie") with "ola," meaning "oily."

  • In 1993 we conducted a poll to find out the most popular colors in America. Blue was voted the most popular Crayola Crayon color. Rounding the top ten were red, violet, green, carnation pink, black, turquoise blue, blue green, periwinkle and magenta.

In 2000, we did another Crayola Color Census, and blue again reigns as number one! Six other shades of blue finished in the Top 10 including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue.  The other colors rounding out the list included purple heart, caribbean green and cerise.
