Getting to the Goal

Setting goals and visualizing achievement is important for growth. Students will illustrate themselves pursuing a dream.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Goal setting is an important social emotional learning skill that helps students become self-motivated and aware of their strengths and challenges while learning about perseverance. Have students think about and create a list of some short-term and long-term goals. Ask them to consider ways to reach these goals. What do they need to do in the near future? What are some ways they can keep themselves on track? What educational requirements are there for a career they want to pursue?

  • Step 2

Ask students to pick one of the goals and illustrate themselves pursuing or achieving it. Have them write an accompanying paragraph that discusses steps they can take to achieve this goal.

  • Step 3

Have them present their illustrations and discuss why this goal is important to them and how they intend to achieve it.

Standards

SEL: Self-Management: Manage one's emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations to achieve goals and aspirations.

SEL: Responsible Decision-Making: Reflect one's role to promote personal, family, and community well-being.

Adaptations

Have students create a list of goals for the week and what they will do to achieve them. For example one might be, "I want to do well on my grammar test" and the steps they take might include "I will study for 30 minutes after dinner," "I will review homework with my family," etc.

Have students create a goals and dreams collage. They might draw pictures of themselves engaging in a dream activity, they might list jobs they'd like to pursue and places where they could best learn the career, and they might include motivating statements to encourage them to persevere.
