Why

Make an extra-special table decoration for your grandparents, on Grandparents Day, or for honored guests any day. Mix up your own Model Magic® colors.

Steps

  1. 1. Being a member of a family is wonderful. Because your grandparents have lived a lot longer than you, they have many things to share: stories about what life was like when they were your age, or skills and talents you can learn from them such as cooking or fishing.
  2. 2. Grandparents are often the best teachers about giving and receiving. Many grandparents love to give presents or special adventures and opportunities. Why not show them that you also like giving as much as receiving?
  3. 3. For Grandparents Day, or any family dinner, make festive gift-box place card holders. For each one, take a handful of white Crayola® Model Magic® and color a small area with Crayola Washable Markers. To create a marbleized wrapping paper effect, mix the colored area partially into the white parts and stop midway. For a pastel color such as pink or light blue, knead until all the white Model Magic is colored. Shape the modeling compound into a box.
  4. 4. Use solid Model Magic colors to form the ribbon and bow. Press in place on the package. Dry.
  5. 5. Fold index cards in half. Write the names of your grandparents and other party guests with markers. Ask an adult to help if you are learning how to spell.
  6. 6. Attach name cards to the presents using Crayola School Glue.

When & Where

"What a great way to remind children of all the wonderful things their grandparents do for them."
- Sheree T., mom of 6-, 7-, and 9-year-olds.

"Children interviewed their grandparents at a party. How much everyone learned about each other!"
- Ntozake C., school volunteer.

Interesting Info

It's interesting to learn what other people call their grandparents. In China, grandmother might be Nai, Nai and grandfather is Ye, Ye. Japanese children may say Halmoni. A child from Crete calls Yaya. What do you call your grandparents?
