Recycle sweater yarn for integrated art projects. The varied textures and colors are a delight for children’s senses.
Provide lots of captivating early literacy experiences. Encourage children to dictate their own stories. Read books daily. Use recipes. Notice signs. Print is all around.
Possibilities for creativity, measurement, and language arts skills are all around these Sweater Letters.

1. Choose a favorite color and texture of yarn. Measure with a ruler and cut a piece about 24 inches long with Crayola® Scissors.
2. On the floor or at a table, shape your yarn into a letter. Walk around to see letters that your friends made.
3. Make a letter shape with Crayola® School Glue on colored construction paper. Glue the yarn to the paper. Dry overnight.
4. With a Crayola® Washable Marker, trace around your yarn letter. Draw a sweater around your letter—or make another interesting background design.

Children work in pairs, with one child naming a letter and the other shaping it with yarn.
Lay the yarn on letters such as newspaper headlines or poster titles. See Yarn Shapes for more possibilities.
Yarn sticks well to a flannel board. Have yarn available for open-ended creative designing.
Scissors—ATTENTION: The cutting edges of scissors are sharp and care should be taken whenever cutting or handling. Blunt-tip scissors should be used only by children 4 years and older. Pointed-tip scissors should be used only by children 6 years and older.
