Teaching Strategies

Adult enthusiasm about reading and writing is contagious. Make lists, write recipes, and record children’s talk at every opportunity. Read books, or tell stories with flannel board figures, daily and with expression. Ask thinking questions to probe children’s understanding: "Who remembers what happened after the dog ran out the gate?" "Why do you think the fish swam away?"

Talk with children about what they’re doing, and then write it down so they see the connection between spoken and written words. Write thank-you notes to guests and field trip guides. Rotate books by borrowing them from a library.
